Your Master’s thesis is a central part of the Artificial Intelligence for Sustainable Societies (AISS) programme. This page brings together essential information, guidance, and official documents to support you throughout your thesis journey.
Thesis-focused courses
During the programme, you will take two compulsory courses focused on thesis development:
- Second semester: IFI7417.DT Master’s Thesis Seminar I
- Third semester: IFI7418.DT Master’s Thesis Seminar II
These thesis seminars support students in developing their Master’s thesis from early topic definition to final research completion. Across the second and third semesters, students refine their research interests, build theoretical and methodological frameworks, develop and conduct independent research, analyse results, and prepare to present and defend their thesis in an academic context.
Alumni tip:
Your thesis effectively starts in the second semester. The final assignment from this course plays a key role in defining which university will host your main supervisor.
How supervision works
- Students are distributed among the three partner universities (Tallinn University, Tampere University, and Lusófona University) through a shared spreadsheet presented by the coordinators.
- This spreadsheet indicates which university will be your main supervising institution.
- Supervisors are assigned by Markku, José and Merja based on your topics.
Alumni tip:
Don’t wait until last minute to contact your supervisor!
Changing your thesis topic
Yes, it is possible to change your thesis topic later. However, you should:
- Treat the thesis-related courses seriously
- Choose topics that genuinely interest you
Timeline
The Master’s thesis process follows official deadlines defined by Tallinn University, and it is the student’s responsibility to stay informed and submit all required documents on time.
Students must regularly consult the Tallinn University Academic Calendar, as it includes key milestones such as the approval of thesis topics and supervisors for each academic year.
One of the first steps in the timeline is the submission of the Master’s Thesis Topic Registration Form. You can find the form and create the needed pdf at: https://dti.tlu.ee/digiois/thesis_registration_form.php?lang=en This form must be:
- filled in by the student,
- signed by the student and the supervisor
- sent to the study counsellor (Kristi) within the deadline defined in the academic calendar.
After all required forms are received, a director’s order will be issued in the study information system. This order is the official confirmation that your thesis topic and supervision have been approved. Eventually, all approved information about thesis topics and supervision will appear in the Tallinn University system:
